My copy of the original "14th Technicolor Dream" ticket.

This is my copy of the original "14th Technicolor Dream" ticket that Glen gave me in 1989, when I visit him at his flat in Sheperd's Bush (London). It's hanging on the wall of my  studio from that year. On the rear there's a dedication by Glen, a simple  "To my friend Luca."

Apart the preciousness of this rare object and the emotion for having received it from Glen, this event was one the most important in the English underground, the concert I wanted to attend.

Found lot of never seen ads about the Band!

After many years of absolute nothing, thanx the Net sometimes we find never seen before stuff about the TEB.

Is just that happening with girl and scissors in the past 1967...?

Available on the Net a TV special titled "What is an happening?" based on the legendary 14th Hour Technicolor Dream at London Alexandra Palace. The TV special was broadcasted by the BBC and aired on May 15th, 1967 for the programme "Man Alive".

Just at the end of the first part there's a short sequence with an happening where a girl has her dress cut with scissors by some guys. Is just that event remembered by Glen Sweeney that gained an ephemeral fame to the Hydrogen Jukebox?

As you probably recall, Sweeney told about it (interviewed in 1990 by Nigel Cross for "Unhinged"): "I have read on a guy called John Cage, and he was using kind of very strange happenings, so I came up with this idea of put in a contact mike on a big pair of scissors, when you make cut emotions you produced a kind of rhythmic sound, you see, I could then use that (this rhythm) for the group, because the group was playing a sort of free-jazz, and I wanted to make more visual. So I've got a girl and cut her closers off at the same time. This of course was received very well at UFO, and we had offers bookings all over the places, because of the publicity".

 

The event was confirmed by Steve Pank in 2004: "They gained notoriety at the event by accompanying a girl called Nita having a paper dress cut off her with scissors, this was reported with a photograph in the "News of the World"".

A new letter from Steve Pank...

While I'm still waiting the Ursula Smith's answers to my questions sent before Christmas, and no news are coming from Denim Bridges (the project of a new TEB record...), just yesterday Steve Pank has written me this letter, quite interesting...

"Hi Luca,

(...) I have been quite busy writing a book of music it is called "Chromatic cycles" and is to help instrumentalists to play in any key, I have written versions for brass instruments, the saxophone, flute keyboard and cello, I have finished them now so I should have more time for other writing.
I have been helping Ursula with her piece for the website, as I was with the band most of the time that she was in it. There is a bit more work to do on it. 

(...) I recently saw Carolyn in London as she came to the Druid ceremony of the spring equinox on Tower Hill, I have some photographs of her in the ceremony and also of Dave Loxley who did the covers for Achemy and the Elements, he is now the Chief Druid. 

I will email you the photographs if I can sort out how to do it. I also have some photographs of Ursula at the end of a concert where she was leading the cello section of the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra.

Whilst I was in London Carolyn gave me a copy of the "Live Ghosts", the album made with Paul Minns and Alan Samuel. I had never heard it before. I knew Alan briefly when he was living at the embassy with Dave Tomlin and others... I though he played nicely and I enjoyed what he did, but the really important thing about that recording is that it was the last that Paul recorded with the Third Ear Band and for me his playing was remarkable, as good as or even better than the work he did with the original band.
I recently bought a CD of "Alchemy" and the Elements from Amazon at a reasonable price, some of the fans might like to know that it is available again...

Carolyn or was it Dave told me that you were interested in the 14 Hour Technicolour Dream which happened in 1967. The person you need to contact about that is Hoppy, John Hopkins, he was the main man, he was a Third Ear Band fan and you may be able to contact him through the International Times website.
